Chamomile has calming and sedative effects to promote healthy sleep and decrease insomnia. Traditionally, it as been regarded as a mild tranquillizer and sleep-inducer. Sedative effects may be due to the flavonoid, apigenin that binds to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain. It has been found that chamomile flavonoids and essential oils penetrate below the skin surface into the deeper skin layers. This is important to note due to its anti-inflammatory properties. 

Lavender is associated with feelings of calm, relaxation and peace. Lavender may assist with restful sleep by decreasing blood pressure and heart rate. It is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, while also assisting with wound healing and tissue growth due to its high level of antioxidants. 

One study found that using ylang-ylang, in combination with lavender and bergamot oil, reduces blood pressure, pulse, stress, anxiety, and cortisol. When it comes to sleep, ylang-ylang can help you fall asleep faster while also reducing stress and anxiety.

Frankincense helps to decrease negative emotions and stress reactions, while promoting feelings of peace, relaxation, satisfaction and overall wellness. It has also been found to decrease blood pressure and heart rate, thus contributing to a deep and restful night sleep.

Lastly, unlike other citrus oils that can be energizing, bergamot has a sedative and calming effect by helping to lower blood pressure and slow the heart rate down.

HOW TO USE

Roll onto wrists, down spine and on soles of feet to help calm nerves before bedtime and assist with a deep, restful sleep.
